On 21st April 1956, the foundation stone of the main building was laid by India's first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. The institute was renamed to Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology in 1960 with the addition of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering branches.
